Josh Taylor is to fight Ekow Essuman at welterweight in Glasgow on May 17 as he attempts to rebuild his career under Queensberry Promotions.
The former undisputed junior-welterweight champion lost to his long-term rival Jack Catterall in May 2024, little over a year after he sacrificed his WBO title when recording his first defeat, by Teofimo Lopez.
His rematch with Catterall represented only his second fight in a period of 28 months during which he was undermined by multiple injuries. It also proved his last fight under the guidance of Top Rank.
Frank Warren’s Queensberry, his new promoters, are yet to confirm the venue of his return to Scotland. They are also promoting Leigh Wood’s fight with Antony Cacace in Nottingham on May 10.
From April, Queensberry’s promotions will be broadcast on DAZN, instead of TNT Sports. Taylor, 34, remains one of the British fight scene’s biggest figures.
“I am so much looking forward to returning to Scotland with the nation’s biggest star and our latest signing, Josh Taylor, headlining and rebooting his career at welterweight, where I believe he can again do big things, but he will be up against it with Ekow Essuman in the opposite corner,” said Warren.
The 35-year-old Essuman, in November, outpointed the previously undefeated Ben Vaughan. The featherweight Lee McGregor will fight his fellow Scotsman Nathaniel Collins on the undercard.
