Josh Taylor has apologised after pleading guilty to racially abusing a bouncer.
The 28-year-old IBF and WBA Super world super-lightweight champion was charged with the offence after being thrown out of Shanghai nightclub in Edinburgh in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Taylor, who beat Regis Prograis to claim the aforementioned WBA Super world title along with the World Boxing Super Series Muhammad Ali Trophy and vacant Ring Magazine belt at the O2 Arena in London back in October, called the doorman "a gay looking c-nt" and "a big Orange looking c-nt" before police were called to the scene.
He was fined £350, pleaded not guilty to possessing cocaine which was accepted during his hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
And now ‘The Tartan Tornado’ has taken to social media to issue his take on the events.
“While out celebrating with friends on Saturday in Edinburgh, I made some stupid comments and poor decisions resulting in legal charges,” he said on Twitter. “I hold my hands up for making remarks which caused offence and I was rightfully found guilty of. I’m ashamed about the whole incident.
“I wholeheartedly apologise for my stupid actions. It has been a rollercoaster of a year for me, becoming unified world champion and on this occasion, I’ve taken it too far.
"I can only apologise, not only to those whom I offended but to my family and friends for the upset I’ve caused. There’s no excuse for the comments and the disturbance. I’m going to take some time off over Christmas to reflect on my actions and ensure it never happens again.”
Taylor, since beating Prograis to become the consensus number one in the super-lightweight division, has shouted about a potential showdown with Jose Carlos Ramirez.
Ramirez, the man who holds the other two belts in the division in the shape of the WBO and WBC crowns, takes on former Taylor opponent Viktor Postol in a world title defence on February 1 at Mission Hills Haikou in Haikou, China, and Taylor will be hoping to secure a showdown with the winner in the hope of becoming the undisputed king at 140 pounds.
Further details regarding Taylor’s next fight will be revealed in due course.
