After a decorated amateur career, which culminated with him representing Mexico in the 2016 Olympic Games, light flyweight Joselito Velazquez is now ready to embark on his professional career.
His manager, Frank Espinoza, advised BoxingScene.com on Wednesday evening - "I can finally say it, he's going to fight on December 17th. It's confirmed and I heard from Mr. (Akihiko) Honda today."
Espinoza, who also manages the likes of WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez, signed Velasquez to a promotional deal with Teiken Promotions, which is based in Japan and specializes in the smaller weight fighters.
Velazquez's pro debut will take place in his hometown on a card staged by Pepe Gomez.
"I'm excited that I was able to make his dream come true after having a great amateur career and one of his dreams ws to go back to Cancun (Mexico) and fight," explained Espinoza.
"So we're really excited about that and we think this kid is just not going to be a world champion but a star - not just in Cancun but all of Mexico. He's got everything: the looks, the style, he can punch, he can box. Everything that fans love to watch."
Espinoza plans to keep his newest client busy in 2017.
"I look for him to fight a minimum of six fights per year. I've always liked active young fighters. I love to see activity because you're alwys staying in shape. We're looking to be active and with the help of Honda we can fight in Mexico, in the States and Japan. I'm very confident we're going to stay busy with Joselito."
