WBC President Jose Sulaiman wants former four division world champion Erik Morales to get medically cleared before a potential farewell fight in Tijuana, Mexico.
Morales, 36-years-old, was the victim of a vicious fourth round last Saturday in Brooklyn. WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia caught him with a sensational left hand on the jaw. Morales was taken off his feet, with his body twisting around. The impact of the punch nearly sent Morales flying out of the ring.
After the loss, Morales admitted that his time in boxing is now over. He wants to have a farewell fight in his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico.
Even if Morales decides to retire without a farewell fight, Sulaiman wants him to visit a doctor and undergo an MRI.
“Erik is a very dear friend of mine and that is why I want him to take a MRI before deciding to fight again... or not. Erik Morales is a future hall of famer. He's a boxing legend. The only Mexican fighter to have decisively defeated Manny Pacquiao. He's given us some incredibly impressive fights during his career. I did recommend to him several times to retire, but sometimes boxers miss the fame, the fans and the money and they return to fighting." Sulaiman said.
