Former champion Jose Antonio Rivera ( 38-5-1, 24KOs) was demanding a big fight from his promoter Don King, and King offered him a bout against another former champion, Daniel Santos (30-3-1, 21KOs) , the last man to beat feared welterweight champ Antonio Margarito.

Before Rivera would agree to the fight, he wanted a bigger payday from King. After some back and forth negotiations, the Worcester Telegram reports that King came up an offer that almost doubled the original deal (from $25k to $45K).

The fight will take place on September 8, possibly at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The WBA's number one ranking in the junior middleweight division will be at stake in the fight.

In his last outing, Rivera lost his WBA 154-pound crown when he suffered an eight-round beating on route to a TKO loss at the hands of Travis Simms ( 25-0, 19KOs) . A win over Santos can set up a rematch if Simms is victorious in a July title defense.
