Jose Nieves recovered from an early knockdown to drill Danny Flores in nine rounds Friday evening at Palm Bay Community Center in Palm Bay, Florida.

Both fighters were anxious to mix it up early on in their televised main event for the season premiere of 'Boxeo Telemundo.' Nieves was believed to be the class of the two, but the Puerto Rican southpaw found himself cornered and eventually on the canvas in round two.

Flores didn't waste any time in going on the attack, but the free-swinging bantamweight soon found himself paired with a waking lion. Nieves turned the tide in round three, fending off one rally after another to eventually take over the fight for good.

Any aspirations Flores had of pulling off the upset came to a crashing halt in round nine. Nieves went on the attack, sending the visiting Mexican to the canvas. Flores arose from the knockdown but was rescued by the referee mere seconds later.

The official time was 1:03 of round nine.

Not generally known for his power, Nieves picks up his third straight knockout as he improves to 22-2-3 (11KO). The nine-round exit marks the deepest point in a fight in which he's stopped an opponent.

Flores has now lost two of his past three - both coming inside the distance and on Telemundo. The Mexican trialhorse falls to 14-3 (8KO).
