Jose “Wonder Boy” Lopez and Josean “El Tren” Figueroa are in the final stages of preparation for their head-on collision February 7 in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

The bout marks Lopez’ first since his wild eight-round clash with Roberto Castañeda last August, which featured seven knockdowns and ringside controversy that’s still being played out in the courtrooms to this day.

Lopez survived the worst round he will ever likely endure, suffering four knockdowns in the opening round and barely making it to the bell. He also scored a knockdown of his own, in addition to sending Castañeda down twice more en route to a decision win that has since carried the suggestion of corruption by at least one ringside official.

While that matter is argued by lawyers, Lopez returns to business. Any loss or tough fight should always be taken as a learning experience. Still more than a month shy of his 21st birthday, Lopez carries that mentality into every fight.

“I am in excellent condition. We have learned from our mistakes,” Lopez (15-0, 11KOs) promises. “I have seen the fight more than 10 times and I learn every time I watch it. This time I will follow the game plan to get the victory.”

His opponent wouldn’t be worthy of being called a fighter if he didn’t come in with every intention to upset the apple cart.

“I know Lopez really well, he is a tough fighter and he can punch with both hands,” notes Figueroa (8-3-1, 7KOs), who hasn’t fought since a knockout loss to then-unbeaten Jonathan Vidal in Oct. ‘12. “I am ready for this fight. I will give a great fight and I am going for the victory. A win over him elevates my career to new heights.”

The show is presented by Promociones Miguel Cotto and Hector Soto's H2 Promotions.
