CAGUAS, PR – The last card Miguel Cotto Promotions and Top Rank presented in Caguas produced a sold out of more than 4,000 fans at the Roger L. Mendoza Coliseum. This time, looking for more capacity, the company will move to the nearby Hector Sola Bezares Coliseum for the August 16 event, Future Stars.
“Last time at the Roger Mendoza was a little small”, said promoter Hector Soto, “the Sola Bezares is a more comfortable venue and will be ready to receive the fans in Caguas”.
Like in the last card, the special attraction of the event will be Top Rank’s super prospect, Felix ‘El Diamante’ Verdejo, who will be fighting in a eight round bout against an opponent soon to be determined in his first fight since he knocked out Mexico’s Engelberto Valenzuela to improve his record to 13-0, 10 KO’s on the June 7 card at Madison Square Garden where Miguel Cotto defeated Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez.
“It’s getting difficult to find rivals”, said his trainer, Ricky Marquez. “Top Rank matchmakers just sent me a list of over 40 fighters that declined to take the fight”.
The co-featured fighter will be the valued bantamweight prospect Jose ‘Wonder Boy’ Lopez (13-0, 10 KO’s), who in an eight round bout will defend his FECARBOX title against Mexico’s Roberto ‘Azabache’ Castañeda (21-6-1, 15 KO’s). Lopez also fought at the Cotto vs. Martinez card at The Garden, where he beat Raul Hidalgo via unanimous decision to retain his FECARBOX title.
“We should expect better quality opponents as we keep progressing in our careers”, said 20-year-old Lopez, about Castaneda’s the record. “It doesn’t cause me any concern”. Castaneda has faced Gary Russell Jr., Felipe Orucuta and Jessie Magdaleno.
The card that will be televised in the United States by Univision Deportes (UniMas), will also count with the presentation of other undefeated prospects. Super Flyweight Jose ‘Chiquiro’ Martinez (11-0, 7 KO’s), of Las Marias, will battle in a six round bout against an opponent soon to be announced; Featherweight prospect Alberto ‘El Explosivo’ Machado (7-0, 5 KO’s), of San Juan, will fight in the same distance against Eliezer Agosto (2-3, 2 KO’s), of Corozal; the North American living in Puerto Rico, Rashidi Ellis (7-0, 6 KO’s) will also battle in a six round fight, but at the welterweight against Mexico’s Guillermo Ibarra (11-5, 7 KO’s); and lightweight Yomar Alamo (5-0, 5 KO’s), of Aguas Buenas, will fight in a four rounder against Juan Cruz (5-13-, 1 KO). The opponents for flyweight Christopher Diaz (5-0, 3 KO’s) nor super bantamweight Freddy Ortiz (1-0, 1 KO) have not been announced.
The program, which will be broadcasted as part of UniMas’s ‘Solo Boxeo Tecate’ Series, will include seven bouts.
“FUTURE STARS” is presented by Cotto Promotions in association with Top Rank and H2 Entertainment and will be televised live at 11pm ET/PT on UniMas.
Entrance to the arena will have a cost of $50 (Red Carpet), $20 (Ring Side) and $12 (General Entrance). Tickets are available on Ticket Center and can be purchased by calling (787) 792-5000 or on the Internet by visiting www.TCPR.com .
