(HOLLYWOOD, Calif.) - Jose Felix is glad his bout against Yakubu Amidu was only scheduled for 10 rounds.
Amidu might have wished the bout would have been scheduled for 12 rounds instead.
Felix controlled the action early on, but had to withstand a late rally by Amidu to win a 10 round unanimous decision at the Florentine Gardens on Saturday night.
Prior to Saturday night, Felix had won three bouts in a row since losing his only bout of his career to Bryan Vasquez. Amidu was stopped by Ivan Redkach after the sixth round on January 10.
Felix seemed to land connect more and often against Amidu in the first half of the fight. Felix landed repeatedly with right hands to the head and mixed in an occasional attack to the body.
Sensing he was down in the fight, Amidu came on in the middle rounds. He attempted to walk Felix down, targeting him with shots to the head. Felix attempted to counter with rights, finding success here and there.
Both fighters dropped each other in the ninth round. Felix dropped Amidu midway through the round, courtesy of a right hand that landed right underneath his chin. Amidu was not visibly hurt, but swung momentum his way towards the end of the round by dropping Felix with a right uppercut to the head. Felix looked somewhat dazed and was fortunate the bell sounded to end the round.
Amidu continued to press the action, landing every so often. Felix was content to work from the outside, countering when he saw openings in Amidu's guard.
All three judges scored the bout in favor of Felix, 97-93, 97-93, and 98-92.
Felix improves to 30-1-1, 24 KOs, while Amidu drops to 21-7-2, 19 KOs.
In the 'Solo Boxeo Tecate' co-feature bout Carlos Carlson stopped Heriberto Delgado in the third round of a scheduled six round bout.
It was all Carlson from the opening bell as he landed the more effective punches throughout the bout. He would land two or three punches for every one Delgado landed.
Carlson dropped Delgado with a straight right hand with about a minute left in the second round. Delgado tried to fight back, but Carlson would put him on the defensive by landing repeatedly with rights.
Carlson dropped Delgado about a minute into the third round with a right to the top of the head.
Carlson went in for the kill, pressing the fight and eventually trapping Delgado against the ropes. Carlson landed a barrage of punches, culminating with a left to the body that dropped Delgado to the canvas. Referee Zachary Young immediately waved the fight over at 1:43.
Carlson improves to 17-1, 11 KOs, while Delgado drops to 11-3, 6 KOs.
Cruiserweight Israel Duffus (8-3, 7 KOs) knocked out Carlos Reyes in the sixth and final round. Duffus dropped Reyes with a right to the head in the first round, but was dropped by Reyes (7-8-1, 5 KOs) with a left to the head. Duffus ended matters at 1:19 of the final round, dropping Reyes flat on his bank and prompting referee Sharon Sands to immediately stop the bout.
In the opening bout of the Top Rank/ Bash Boxing card, featherweight Leonardo Chavez stopped Daniel Constantino at 39 seconds. Constantino, who was making his pro debut, was dropped by a right to the head from Chavez (3-1, 3 KOs). After Constantino got up, Chavez was on the attack, prompting referee Eddie Hernandez to stop the bout before Constantino took any more punishment.
