The Houston Chronicle reports that Jose “Pit Bull" Diaz (14-1, 4 KOs), the younger brother of lightweight world champion Juan Diaz, had surgery on Monday to repair a broken jaw, suffered in his first career loss which took place last Friday in California.

Manager Willie Savannah told the paper that the surgery was performed at Memorial Hermann Hospital, with doctors inserting pins and screws into the jaw. Diaz is planning a ring return in 2008.

Unheralded challenger Miguel Mengui broke Diaz's jaw and dislocated his tooth in the very first round. Diaz, 22, asked his trainer to pull out the tooth at the end of the round. Diaz was able to last the entire ten-rounds and lost by decision.

“The kid was in tremendous pain and never said a word about it to any one,” said Savannah. “When we found out that his jaw had been broken, we couldn’t believe that he stayed in there and finished all 10 rounds of the fight.”
