Puerto Rico's Jose Miguel Cotto (31-1-1, 23 KOs) is confident about his chances to beat undefeated welterweight prospect Saul Alvarez (31-0, 23 KOs) of Mexico. The fight takes place on the Floyd Mayweather-Shane Mosley pay-per-view undercard on May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The fight takes place at welterweight. Cotto has to move up from junior welterweight and some say he is a much better fighter at lightweight. The weight won't play a role in the fight says Cotto. Alvarez is 5'9 with a reach of 71 and Cotto is 5'5½ with a reach of 68.
"Let him be nervous. He did not want to lose the weight, and although I feel better fighting at 135 to 140 pounds, I know the weight is not going to be a problem," Cotto said.
Cotto is already training in Tampa, Florida with his younger brother and two-division champion Miguel Cotto. He is focused on beating Alvarez in order to land a title shot opportunity by the end of the year or early 2011.
"I've always been ready [to win a championship]. I hope that in my next fight I'll be given the opportunity to do it," Cotto said.
