It may sound confusing but Jose Benavidez Sr. is both patient and impatient. Let me explain.

Although he has two sons fully involved in the sport of boxing, David Benavidez has become one of the best fighters in the world. Jose has always been aware of his son’s talents, even before he turned pro.

Up until this point, Jose continues to do his best to drum up some interest in his 26-year-old. It isn’t because he’s unknown, but mostly because the rest of the super middleweight division's elite have been reluctant about facing him.

Patience was required after all these years. Both Jose and David begrudgingly accepted matchups with no names and tenuous opponents. It wasn’t what they wanted but it allowed David to become a two-time champion. Now, after seemingly paying his dues, some of the best fighters around are willing to fight him.

Earlier this year, David took on Caleb Plant. The curse-filled press conferences they engaged in were fun, but their actual showdown was even more entertaining. For the second time this year, he’ll face another elite-level opponent, this time in the form of Demetrius Andrade.

Jose isn’t unnerved about what Andrade brings to the table but he did admit that his son will likely be placed in a few hirsute situations. Still, regardless of how good Andrade is, Jose is willing to bet whatever is in his bank account that his son comes out on top.

If Andrade’s carcass gets tossed off the super middleweight cliff, Jose believes that Canelo Alvarez should face him next. Alvarez, so far, has been a bit lukewarm on that idea.

There are only a few options remaining for his son. Alvarez is obviously the guy he wants most. But he’s also willing to have his son stick around if David Morrell or Jaime Munguia step up to the plate.

Ultimately, no one may come knocking on their door. If that’s the case, then the top dogs at 175 pounds need to make room for David Benavidez.

“If nothing happens at 168, we’re ready to go to 175 and face Bivol or Beterbiev,” Jose told Fight Hub TV. "We're ready."
