Jorge Linares has an obsession. He’s ravenous for a rematch against Antonio DeMarco, who sliced and diced him last October 15th at the Staples Center.
But before he can gain that carrot, he must stick to the task of taking on and defeating rugged El Chetumaleño Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson in the ten thousand capacity Oasis Arena, at the exquisite Grand Oasis Hotel in beautiful Cancun. The fight scheduled for March 31st, is being promoted by Pepe Gomez and Golden Boy Promotions.
Jorge who’s a former WBC Featherweight Champion and a former WBA Super Featherweight Champion, (31-2, 20 KO’s) is a noted puncher. But Sergio (21-2, 19 KO’s) also packs tommy gun power, exceeding a Chicago typewriter in either hand, and has bull-like strength.
At WBC Headquarters, skirting Mexico’s City’s Zona Rosa, sporting dark glasses, which he gingerly removed a couple of times, to show a healed nose and repaired right eye, Jorge explained that a week before the DeMarco fight, there’d been an accident in sparring with Manny Pacquiao. In humid conditions with sweaty gloves a swelling erupted over his right eye, which was exactly on the place where he’d been cut a couple of years previously, and come fight night the swollen tissue popped open.
Jorge says he’s ripped and ready for this fight and at twenty six, he’s at the peak of his powers. He commented: “I’ve been working hard with Alex (Ariza) and with Freddie (Roach). I’m looking to coming out of this fight very well, and then I’m looking for a rematch with Antonio DeMarco.”
Sergio is itching to render a giant tear up in the script. He said: “It’s an honor to fight Jorge Linares. It’s an amazing opportunity and I’m hungry for success. I’m well prepared, ready and motivated. I’ll also be fighting in front of my own people, and I’m going to show what I’ve got........100% Mexican!”
