WBC Interim Flyweight Champion Jorge Arce isn’t planning to live off the fat of the land.
El Tracieso (Scamp) is defying the elements to go straight to the top, training wise. On January 2nd he’ll be back at the Otomi High Altitude Training Center, high in the mountains of Toluca.
A chilly place even in the summer months, The Otomi, which is guarded by a fearsome nine foot bronze statue of a native warrior, is currently shrouded in an icy mist.
Undaunted, Arce who’s recently defeated Hussein Hussein twice and Adonis Rivas, is staying in top gear for his next fight on January 28th. This’ll be against an opponent as yet to be named in the sunnier landscape of Cancun, on Night of the Champions.
Jorge is keen to take on WBC Champ Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. But he’s even keener to fight the legendary Rosendo Alvarez of Nicaragua.
Rosendo’s the only man to have marginally dented the unblemished record of the all time Mexican great Ricardo Finito Lopez. Rosendo drew with the Great one in their first clash on, July 3rd 1998, but then lost in a rematch four months later.
Jorge is determined to mark this notch on his belt for Mexican pride, but his desire to change a Bufalo into a Chicken is not going to work.
Tough as nails veteran Rosendo glories in the Bafalo nickname. While Jorge has been dubbing him a chicken, and daring him to sign a contract for a ring conflict.
Unruffled, Rosendo is carefully weighing up the options before charging. He took a long hard and cool look at Jorge when working the corner of fellow countryman Adonis Rivas in Monterrey, as recently as December 16th. Although Jorge pulled off an early knockdown, and was clearly winning, the fight was surprisingly stopped in the 10th round, after Rivas had suffered a cut, which appeared to be minor and non hampering.
Rosendo’s next fight is against Eduardo Pacheco Rivas on February 4th in Panama.
Meanwhile, former IBF strawweight champion Edgar Tun Tun Cardenas, who’s now a Trainer, will be putting Scamp through his paces, the greenhouse gym at the Otomi.
Super Featherweight idol Erik Morales has interestingly forgone altitude for warmth. Erik also normally trains at Otomi, but because of the artic weather there, he’s preparing for his January 21st re-match with Manny Pacquiao in warmer Queretaro.
