British Featherweight Jordan Gill (24-1, 7 KOs) will miss the rest of the year due to health issues.
Trained by Dave Coldwell, the 25-year-old from Chatteris last fought on September 19th, in Italy, defeating Yesner Talavera over six rounds on a Matchroom Italy card. The win over Talavera was a welcome return to winning ways after losing his WBA International Featherweight title to Enrique Tinoco back in May.
“Absolutely gutted to say that due to health issues I won’t be fighting against this year,” said Gill.
“Got myself in great shape and I was hoping for a big fight before the end of the year, but unfortunately I just won’t be able to. Boxing is my life, and I’ll be in the ring as soon as I can in 2020, but my health has to come first.”
Gill had built up some great momentum, particularly in 2018 defeating Ryan Doyle to win the Commonwealth Featherweight title on a night that showed viewers on Sky Sports the potential that Gill has. Tinoco provided a major bump in the road when taking Gill’s unbeaten slate but reports soon emerged that Gill had been suffering from food poisoning on the day of the fight and paid the price when Tinoco punished Gill’s body on fight night.
“I had too much pride to withdraw before, and things went from bad to worse when I fractured my right hand early on,” said Gill in the aftermath of the loss before crediting Tinoco for his performance.
Gill had hoped for an immediate rematch once the hand healed but all plans for a fight against Tinoco or against anyone at 126lbs are on hold for the foreseeable future.
Gill was unable to say too much when ‘Scene reached out to him for a comment but we will hopefully be speaking to him in detail before the end of the year. All at Boxing Scene wish him a speedy recovery.
