After a tragic start to his year, super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo (22-2, 15KOs) is finally ready to move forward with his life. A few days ago he appeared in court in Aibonito, Puerto Rico - and the southpaw pled guilty to a charge of negligence, related to a February ATV accident that resulted in the death of his girlfriend Melanie Miranda Columbus. The boxer received six months of probation. Oquendo is the WBO's Latino champion at 122-pounds.
"This is a sad story. At least the legal part of that chapter is closed," stated promoter Peter Rivera of Puerto Rico Bext Boxing, to Jose Sanchez. "Things are falling into place. He is still receiving counseling and hopefully in September or October he will return to work."
Oquendo could defend his regional title 122-pound Latino World Boxing Organisation for his next fight, said the promoter.
