Sources have informed BoxingScene.com that unbeaten junior middleweight Jonathan Gonzalez (15-0, 13KOs) will return on January 4th in Miami, Florida. The opponent is likely going to be veteran Dereck "Pooh" Ennis (23-3-1, 13), who holds victories over Gabe Rosado among others.
ESPN will reportedly televise the fight as part of their 2013 debut of Friday Night Fights.
Gonzalez last fought in September against former WBO champion Sergei Dzinziruk. Personal issues prevented Gonzalez from properly training for the fight and he came in well above the junior middleweight limit of 154. Gonzalez, who weighed in at 163, was sluggish and out of shape, but still did enough to earn a decision victory over Dzinziruk. However, the judges disagreed. The fight was scored as a twelve round draw - with one judge going for Gonzalez with a card of 117-111, another scoring 114-114 for the draw, and the third having a tally of 115-113 for the former champ.
