We recently welcomed undefeated junior middleweight prospect Jonathan "Mantequilla" Gonzalez (14-0) to The Boxing Lab, BoxingScene.com's official audio show. Gonzalez faces tough veteran Billy Lyell (24-10) on the latest edition of Showtime's ShoBox series. The fight takes place at the Chumash Casino this Friday night.
Gonzalez has finished off 13 of his 14 opponents within the distance with Richard Gutierrez being the only exception. The Gutierrez fight was Gonzalez's most recent ring appearance which took place this past June. Gonzalez won that fight by a wide margin and said that going the distance was a great experience.
"I felt good (going 10 rounds). I always knew there would be a time where I would face a fighter I wouldn't knockout. It was a great experience. I won an unanimous decision. He was a great fighter. When I came back to Puerto Rico I saw (on the tape) there were things I could work on," said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said that he never goes into a fight looking for a knockout. He said that he has trained very hard for Lyell and when pressed for a prediction he did reveal to us that he doesn't see the fight going the distance.
"We worked hard in the gym. If things go like we planned in the gym I don't think it goes past the 6th round," Gonzalez told The Boxing Lab.
Lyell has only been knocked out three times in his ten career losses. Two of those knockouts were against James Kirkland and Sebastian Sylvester. Lyell has gone the distance in defeat versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Vanes Martirosyan and Yory Boy Campas
