Heavyweight contender Kirk Johnson feels inspired by the recent title victory of Oleg Maskaev. Johnson holds a 4-round knockout victory over Maskaev, but like Maskaev, he's been trying to rebuild his career after battling with injuries and suffering three crushing defeats. The last defeat, to Javier Mora, was recently changed to a no-contest by the California State Athletic Commission.
Like Maskaev, people have told Johnson to retire and called him a shot fighter, and like Maskaev - Johnson is going to move forward with his career.
Johnson told the Halifax News that Maskaev's hard work brought him the heavyweight title.
"I felt a sense of happiness for him," said Johnson. "He had to work his way back from a point where a lot of people were saying he should've retired. Through thick and thin, this man was still able to win the championship of the world, so I think it's a testimony to me, because as long as you work hard and don't give up, the sky's the limit."
He was ringside in Las Vegas to witness the biggest win of Maskaev's career, and felt Rahman did not listen to the strategy of his corner and fought the wrong fight.
"When Rahman came out for the 12th round, I said to myself that he was dead tired and Oleg just might win this," said Johnson. Rahman started off good, but he used too much energy early. You can't throw little pitter-patter combinations against Oleg, because he's so strong and he'll just walk right through you."
