At the Eston Sports Academy in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, John Simpson (18-6, 6KOs)upset previously undefeated Paul Truscott (12-0, 1KOs) to capture the Commonwealth featherweight title. The fight was stopped in the eighth round due to an eye injury to Truscott.

It was a grueling fight for Truscott, who had a cut near his left eye and a damaged right eye. The right eye caused the ringside doctor to stop the fight. After an earlier clash of heads, Truscott's eye began to swell and was nearly shut by the time the fight was stopped.

The fight was fought on even ground until the eye began to really bother Truscott, who couldn't see Simpson's punches coming.
