Trainer Miguel Diaz is confident his fighter, former two-time heavyweight champion John Ruiz, will snatch the WBA crown of David Haye on April 3 in Manchester. When Diaz first hooked up with the fighter, the immediate order of business was to change the horrible grab and hold style of Ruiz.
"I did not like his style of holding and pushing like a bull. I told that had to disappear and we arrived at an agreement that he would adopt the style of my other boxers. John liked it and I discovered that he has a fantastic jab," Diaz told Primera Hora.
Diaz began teaching Ruzi to use the jab he barely used in his previous fights. There are still things they need to work on but Ruiz will be ready for the challenge of Haye on April 3.
"He has a beautiful jab and that is something that a person can't learn in two days, but still has the problem when he comes inside, because he remains a little off-balance. John has been working very well and even others have noticed the improvement. At the age of 38, he is adopting and doing things that he did not do for 12 or 13 years," Diaz said.
A few reporters from England actually came down to Ruiz's camp and watched the former champion train. They were impressed with the "new" Ruiz. Diaz watched a few tapes of Haye. The plan is to have Ruiz pressure Haye from the start and throw a lot of punches to test the British fighter's chin.
"Some journalists from England came to see him, and they are not fools - they realized John is in excellent physical condition. I have seen some videos of Haye and when you pressure him a little, he loosens up. He is a good fighter, but against John he is going to have to show that he has a jaw. Ruiz is going to put out a lot of offensive in that fight," Diaz said.
