The bout between unbeaten "Irish" John Duddy and IBF junior middleweight champ Verno Phillips is not a done deal as many have reported. Duddy, an undefeated middleweight, plans to move down to 154-pounds to seek out a championship fight.
Jim Borzell, the matchmaker for Irish Ropes, who promote Duddy, tells writer George Kimball that he plans to head out to Montreal next Friday to scout Joachim Alcine and Daniel Santos, who collide for Alcine's WBA junior middleweight title. While Phillips is the frontrunner to get the fight, Borzell made it clear that Irish Ropes is looking to get Duddy the best chance at a title with the most money involved.
“If it’s 100 percent, then why am I buying airfare to watch (Joachim Alcine vs. Daniel Santos) next week?” Borzell said. “No, we’re in the hunt to give John the best chance at a world championship, at the possible best price.”
