According to the Derry Journal, John Duddy's bout with Sam Hill, scheduled for November 21 in New York City, has been called off. No official reason was given, but Duddy told the paper the event as a whole may be off. Duddy was using the fight as a tuneup before a January 17 showdown with another unbeaten, Ronald Hearns. Duddy has not fought since June and told the paper that he's very upset with the fight being off.
"It is out of my control. Obviously I'm very disappointed," Duddy said.
In other news, SABC News reports that former South African featherweight champion Edward Mpofu has been banned for life from boxing for putting plaster inside of his gloves for a September fight with Thanduxolo Dyani in East London. Mpofu and his manager, Eugene Khanyile, were charged. When local promoter, Mzimasi Mnguni, became suspicious about the unusual stiffness of Mpofu's bandaging, the fighter tried to flee the arena.
