Undefeated middleweight John Duddy is backing fellow Irishman Wayne McCullough in his comeback bid on Dec. 1 at King's Hall. McCullough returns to the ring against European super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez, an unbeaten power-hitter from Spain. Martinez, who blew away prospect Bernard Dunne in only 86-seconds in August, is a heavy favorite to beat the former champ.
Duddy tells the Belfast Telegraph that fans should not write McCullough off.
"I'm a Wayne McCullough fan and I would love to see Wayne do it and I think he can," Duddy said. "Martinez is favourite and he can obviously punch but McCullough has a great chin and what happens if McCullough is still there after a few rounds - does he have a plan B?"
Naseem Hamed, Erik Morales and Scott Harrison were all unable to stop McCullough, which makes Duddy doubt that Martinez will be able to win by knockout.
"Wayne McCullough has only ever lost to the very best and he's such a dedicated and fit fighter ? you've seen that right from his amateur days to the pro days. He's going to be 110 per cent ready to go and if this guy thinks that he's going to do to Wayne what he did to Bernard Dunne he's in for a big shock. After all Scott Harrison, Prince Naseem and Erik Morales couldn't stop Wayne so why should this guy? I think it's going to be a great scrap and I just hope Wayne can come out on top."
