Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, home of “Smokin” Joe Frazier and “Terrible” Tim Witherspoon, will soon have a new heavyweight champion, Joey “Polish Thunder” Dawejko. After having a much heralded amateur career, Dawejko has elected to turn professional by signing an exclusive managerial contract with the new management team of Hasim Rahman and Steve Nelson.
Although only nineteen years old , Dawejko has had many accomplishments in the amateur ranks. These include being the youngest gold medalist (16 years old) in the US Olympic Eastern Trials, being the 2007 National PAL Champion, being the 2008, under nineteen, US National Champion, and being the 2008, under nineteen, World Champion.
By signing with the new management team of Rahman and Nelson, Dawejko has the both of best worlds, one manager who understands how to become heavyweight champion by being one and the other who guided him there.
Rahman, who may be the first boxing manager to actually box with his client, has stated that “having sparred with Joey on several occasions, I know he has the tools to become not only heavyweight champion, but a fighter who can bring back excitement to the heavyweight division”. Nelson believes that “not only will Philadelphia and America fall in love with Joey, but all of Polish descent will be cheering on the first and only Polish heavyweight champion of the world”.
Dawejko is thrilled by turning professional with his new management team and looks forward to his professional debut. Training with long-time trainer Brian McGinley, Dawejko says “look out world, here I come”. Boxing fans throughout the world will soon be able to see the future of heavyweight boxing, “Polish Thunder” tearing apart the heavyweight division.
