Sam Kynoch of MTK Scotland has confirmed that talented Liverpool-based boxer-puncher Joe Selkirk has signed a deal with MTK and is set to return to action at the Echo Arena on September 30 as part of Eddie Hearn’s ‘Battle on the Mersey’ bill, which will be headlined by Rocky Fielding’s British Super middleweight title fight against Scotland’s Commonwealth holder David Brophy.

The 32-year-old former contender retired in February of last year due to persistent hand injuries.  However, MTK revealed that he has decided to return via social media and will resume what was once a promising professional career.  Selkirk also confirmed the news to BoxingScene, saying that he “Cannot wait” to get back into the mix.

A former ABA champion as an amateur, the Liverpudlian won the vacant WBO European light-middleweight title courtesy of a third-round TKO over Zoltan Sera at the city’s Echo Arena in December 2013.

He then had to sit out 2014 due to injury and despite a brace of wins against Yuri Pompilio (W TKO 6) and Zoltan Turai (W TKO 1) in a stop-start 2015 he decided to walk away from the sport.

A talented boxer and hard puncher, Selkirk was widely tipped for big things only to struggle to gain momentum during a staccato first run in the sport.  If his hands hold up and he gets a run of fights he could still fulfil the potential that led many to predict that he would one day hold aloft a world title belt.
