Undefeated junior middleweight Joe Greene (20-0, 14KOs) has withdrawn from his January 17 clash with Sergio Martinez (44-1-1, 24 KOs), the WBC interim champion. The fight was scheduled to take place as the HBO televised co-feature to Andre Berto-Luis Collazo. Greene was dealing with a bad case of kidney stones. He saw a doctor who advised him to withdraw from fight.

According to Dan Rafael, Anthony Thompson (23-3, 17 KOs) and former champion Travis Simms (26-1, 19 KOs) are two of the names being considered to replace Greene. WBA champion Daniel Santos was offered the opportunity, but turned it down due to the fight being less than two weeks away.

"He wanted to stay in the fight despite this, but he has kidney stones and if they flare up, we have a problem. The doctor said that he recommended that Joe not engage in any strenuous activity, so he's out of the fight," Martinez's promoter Lou DiBella told Rafael.
