Gabriel Flores Jnr believes that Joe Cordina is capable of winning the WBO lightweight title from Abdullah Mason.
Wales’ Cordina earlier in December put himself on course to challenge the new champion in 2026 by winning his eliminator against Flores Jnr.
In November Mason, 21, excelled in winning the vacant WBO title via victory over the previously undefeated Sam Noakes, enhancing his reputation as one of the finest young fighters in the world.
At the age of 34 Cordina, who previously excelled at junior lightweight, is targeting winning his first world title at 135lbs.
Mason is regardless widely expected to improve as a consequence of his victory over Noakes, but Flores Jnr told BoxingScene: “He’s won the title before. Would I give him a chance? Most definitely, yeah.
“He was my toughest test so far. His experience – he’s a two-time world champion. He has great skill. He has some speed on him. He’s real intense.”
Asked who he considers the world’s leading lightweight, he then responded: “Shakur [Stevenson’s] at 140, so I’d say Gervonta Davis.”
