At New York's Madison Square Garden, Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32KOs) got off the deck to dominate and punish Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38KOs) for a unanimous twelve round decision. The scores were 118-109, 118-109 and 118-109.
Calzaghe came out fast, throwing punches in bunches and backing Jones up. Jones then landed a counter right hand that sent Calzaghe down. Jones tried to finish him, but Calzaghe stood his ground and was giving as good as he got, getting himself out of trouble. Calzaghe resumed his workrate in round two, Jones had confidence from the first and was trying to lure the Welsh fighter into a brawl. Calzaghe went all out in round three, throwing multiple combinations and making Jones cover up for the majority of the round. From this point on, Calzaghe took over the entire fight.
Calzaghe and Jones were taking turns showboating to the crowd. Calzaghe continued to dominate the action the fourth with combinations while making Roy mniss his counters. The fifth round was close, but Calzaghe's higher volume was the difference to steal it at the end. The left eye of Jones' eye began to swell up from Calzaghe's flurries. Other than a big uppercut in the sixth, Calzaghe continued to work him over.
During the seventh round action, Calzaghe opened up a serious cut above the left eye of Jones, the first cut of Roy's career. He stunned Jones with another left and beat on him against the ropes. Calzaghe would target the cut in the eight, landing his flurries. The onslaught continued the beating in the ninth and went to town in the tenth. By this time Jones could barely see out of his left eye and wasn't able to land much of anything. Calzaghe worked Jones over in the eleventh and twelfth, taking it easy as Jones was a beaten man and presented no danger.
Calzaghe has called this the final fight of his career and it could be the final fight of Jones' career.
