Undefeated Joe Calzaghe has no regrets about announcing his retirement from the sport of boxing. Last week, fans and numerous fighters were shocked when Calzaghe issued a public retirement announcement. At a recent dinner that was held over the weekend in his honor, Calzaghe refused to rule out a possible return in the future.

“It has been a fantastic experience and I just hope I brought a lot of happiness to boxing fans around the world,” Calzaghe was quoted as saying by Daily Express. “I can’t see any point in carrying on right now because there is nothing left for me to do, but you never know what might happen in the future. Nobody does."

Calzaghe feels the decision he made to walk away was the right one, rather than sticking around. He had a lot of goals and says that all of them have been accomplished.

“I am happy with my decision to retire as I have had a great career and only now am I getting the recognition which I deserve. It took a long time, but boxing fans are now realising what I have done is very special. I won the world title in 1997 and kept it for nearly 12 years. Nobody in the sport has ever done that,” Calzaghe said.

“The decision I have taken is the right one. I am going into promoting and there are so many other things I want to do,” he said. Boxing has been great to me and I’ve loved every minute of being a fighter. I like the thought of retiring undefeated because so few fighters have done it.”
