As reported several times in the past on BoxingScene.com, unbeaten light heavyweight Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32KOs) is likely heading to Golden Boy Promotions. There is talk that Calzaghe may stage one last fight at the Millennium Stadium next summer. He recently created his own promotional company, Joe Calzaghe Promotions, and to compete with some of the other promotional companies created by other UK stars like Ricky Hatton and David Haye - he needs to link up with a bridge to America and views Golden Boy as that bridge. Both Hatton and Haye have promotional deals with Golden Boy.

“I have had talks with Golden Boy, a few times actually. I know Oscar quite well, we have spoken about it and it’s a possibility in the future. It’s definitely something I would be interested in. It can only be a positive for my career as a promoter. I have had a decent relationship with Golden Boy since my fight with Hopkins in Las Vegas. They would be happy to be on board with us and vice versa," Calzaghe told Wales Online.

Whether or not Calzaghe sticks to his retirement plan, he wants to hang around the sport of boxing.

“There is a tremendous gym in Newbridge and plenty of good boxers in Wales for me to work with. And I don’t just want to work with those at the top. Part of me going into promotion is to do more work to make those boxers with a lower profile fight regularly and earn a living. Obviously, I will start out small. But boxing is in my blood and it is something I always want to stay involved in,” Calzaghe said.

“There are a few of us doing it now when you look at Ricky’s Punch Promotions or Haye’s Haymaker Promotions. Whether we will all be allies remains to be seen, but I think we could put on some good shows together. I know it’s going to be difficult though, because promoting is a hard sport in its own right."
