Former two-division titlist Joan Guzman has signed a promotional contract with Florida-based promoter Acquinity Sports, Boxingscene.com was informed Thursday evening.
It’s been a busy month for Acquinity, having made its televised debut with a Telefutura Solo Boxeo show on January 7 and now the recent addition of the unbeaten 140 lb. contender.
The deal comes at a time when Guzman (31-0-1, 18KO) is looking to regain his place in the boxing world, having fell off the map in recent times despite maintaining his unbeaten mark. Guzman has bounced around between promoters over the course of his 14-year career.
His most recent stint with Golden Boy came to an end after coming in over the contracted weight for a Dec. ’10 tune-up bout that came on the undercard of Amir Khan’s narrow win over Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas.
The plan was to match up Guzman with the evening’s winner (Khan), but the scale debacle – at least the fourth time in his career in which he’s missed weight – was the last straw. The cherry on top came after the fight, when he tested positive for a banned diuretic.
The former champ returned to the ring last November, scoring a first round knockout over Florencio Castellano in his native Dominican Republic.
Plans remain in place for the Dominican to return to the ring on March 2, presumably on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, unless Acquinity Sports has new plans in place. The hope was for Guzman to square off against countryman Victor Cayo in a bout that would have served as a semi-final eliminator, but the two sides were unable to come to terms for a fight that would fit within the televised parameters.
Acquinity Sports stated prior to its aforementioned Telefutura show that the plan was to present at least one event per every two months. Hitching on to Guzman’s next ring appearance would stay true to that pattern, which makes the signing that much more practical.
