Former WBA and WBO Bantamweight Champion Jhonny Gonzalez is fighting for the vacant FECARBOX Featherweight title tonight in Mexico City.

Jhonny 41-7 with 35 KO’s, who excelled at the lower weight, came unstuck at Super Bantam, when he tried to take on Israel Vazquez, who TKO’d him in ten after a thrilling give and take knockdown brawl. He also decked Toshiaki Nishoka who recovered to TKO him in three, in the same weight category.

His opponent this time around, is rugged but appreciably less experienced Marlon Aguilar 21-8 with 16 KO’s and one draw.

At the final weigh in at the WBC offices in Mexico City, heavily muscled Marlon, who’s nickname is Rocky, and La Rata, weighed in at 57 kilos, while Jhonny was 56.500.

After re-clothing and quenching his thirst, Marlon predicted he’ll knock Jhonny out, but fight an intelligent bout to achieve it. He said that all Mexicans are tough fighters with plenty of heart, but he’s fought at featherweight and super featherweight and is naturally strong in these divisions. He also suggested that perhaps Jhonny will not be able to bring his punching power two divisions up.

Jhonny who’s been guided throughout his career by his Father, but is now training with Ignancio “Nacho” Beristain, is quietly confident. He says he’s prepared himself to go the whole distance if necessary, will draw on his deep reservoir of experience, and he’s delighted to be fighting in Mexico City, for the first time in seven years.

He said he sees this as an important step towards another world title, and as a defining fight in an already eventful career.
