Former triple world champion Jhonny Gonzalez is training hard for his next fight, scheduled for April 2 against Japanese contender Kosuke Saka, tentatively in Acapulco, Guerrero.
Gonzalez has not stepped in the ring since last December, when he defeated another Japanese fighter Hurricane Futa on points in Los Mochis, Sinaloa.
Saka (12-3, 9KOs) has won his last four bouts by knockout. Gonzalez (59-10, 49KOs) is still looking to get his career in order after a lackluster 2015.
Gonzalez was knocked out in four rounds, losing his WBC featherweight championship in four rounds to Gary Russell Jr. in March. He moved up to super featherweight and stopped Kazuki Hasimoto of Japan in two rounds.
Gonzalez then returned on September 12th, as part of the Floyd Mayweather-Andre Berto Showtime Pay-Per-View undercard and lost a twelve round majority decision to Jonathan Oquendo of Puerto Rico. Then came the fight against Futa, which Gonzalez won with a twelve round unanimous decision.
"I'm ready for whatever comes. I have not seen much of my opponent, but he has a record that speaks very well of him. He is a born puncher. It's something that does not intimidate me because I have the punch to impose respect and to get ahead of any challenge that is put on the path between myself and the world championship," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez wants to get a world title fight by the end of the year. In the last few months his name has been mentioned by several top names as an opponent.
