Newly crowned WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10KOs) was on hand last Friday night when former four-division champion Adrien Broner (32-2, 24KOs) stopped Ashley Theophane in 9 rounds in Washington, DC in a bout that aired live on Spike TV.
The Las Vegas based Vargas wasn't very impressed with Broner's performance and gave Theophane credit for staying in the fight as long as he did.
"I thought Ashley fought well. I thought he did a good job of staying in the fight and scoring points. Maybe his shots weren't as effective but he was consistent. Broner didn't seem to have consistency. He would fight but in small bursts. One punch or two punch combinations a round and he would expect to win the round but that is not giving the fans a great fight. You have to fight every second of all 12 rounds. He wasn't very impressive to be honest," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
After winning the title, Vargas finds himself with a slew of options. He recently told BoxingScene.com that he is interested in facing Danny Garcia, Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez and a rematch against Tim Bradley.
Vargas also said that he wouldn't mind facing Broner and is very confident in how the fight would end.
"If I was to fight him I would knock him out. That is just the way I am going out. I am not trying to rely on the judges. Much respect to them but there is no better outcome than having everything under control yourself but Broner would go down against Jessie Vargas," said Vargas.
