Over the past two years, undefeated junior welterweight/welterweight contender Jessie Vargas (23-0) has campaigned for a title shot. On April 12th he will finally get his chance when he faces WBA/IBO junior welterweight champion Khabib Allakhverdiev (19-0) in Las Vegas on the televised pay-per-view undercard of Manny Pacquiao's next ring appearance.
Vargas said that he plans on putting on a great performance and proving his critics wrong.
"It feels great to know I'm finally getting my opportunity to fight for the world title. I'm excited and anxious for the date to come. I'm ready to come in and surprise everyone with a great performance and becoming a world champion," Vargas stated.
While the 24-year-old Vargas respects his opponent, he feels that's he is better than Allakhverdiev in every category. The Las Vegas resident said that there is no way he is leaving the ring without the belt around his waist.
"I don't think too much of him (as a fighter). He's a good fighter but nothing great. He also likes to move around and box a bit but I don't see how he could try doing that with me. I am much taller and stronger than him. I feel I am the better boxer and fighter on the inside. I also have more experience than he does. I have every advantage," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
