After more than two weeks of uncertainty, former four division world champion Erik 'El Terrible' Morales has announced that he will continue as head trainer of junior welterweight/welterweight contender Jessie Vargas, who lost his unbeaten record on June 27 in California against Timothy Bradley. It was first fight in the Vargas/Morales working relationship. Morales replaced another former four division champion in Roy Jones Jr.
"I had the opportunity to talk to Jessie. We talked about many things, and in the end we agreed that we will continue working together," said Morales to ESPN Deportes.
Morales said he is not sure when Vargas will return to action. Manager Cameron Dunkin will present the team with some possibilities in the coming weeks.
The fight with Bradley was stained by controversy. Vargas, who lost most of the earlier rounds, had Bradley in serious trouble in the final minute of the contest. He claims his ability to score a knockout was thwarted when referee Pat Russell accidently stopped the fight eight seconds early - as Vargas was trying to end the fight. Vargas is attempting to get the fight outcome changed to a no-contest with the California State Athletic Commission.
