Remember Jermall Charlo? Memories of the 33-year-old brutally stopping an undefeated Julian Williams and dominating Sergiy Derevyanchenko are quickly fading.
Once considered one of the very best fighters on the planet, the Houston native has fallen off the grid. His fall from grace has been head-scratching for fans. Considering that his ring absence has been shrouded in mystery, it’s unknown whether or not he’ll eventually return.
Coming up on just over two and a half years since he last fought, Jermell Charlo, his twin brother and current undisputed junior middleweight champion, believes that his brother’s situation is poignant. Although he didn’t dive deep into the personal issues that his twin is facing, Jermell believes that his brother's inner circle has played a part in his regression.
“I think that he just surrounded himself with some of the wrong people,” said Jermell on The Last Stand Podcast. “Who’s there in your ear trying to tell you to get better? If you gonna bounce back, go ahead and bounce back and let that be your fight every day.”
According to multiple reports, Jermall’s issues are family-related. The current WBC middleweight titlist has admitted in the past that a divorce has been one of the demons he’s been recently fighting.
Throughout it all, Jermall has remained out of sight and out of mind. Jermell, on the other hand, has seen his career go to the next level. In addition to aggregating every world title at 154 pounds, the loquacious trash talker is set to move up two weight classes to take on Canelo Alvarez after Jermall initially turned down that very offer to focus on his mental health.
For the most part, Jermall’s future isn't well known. While he’s given multiple dates for his ring return, none have come to fruition.
As the current WBC middleweight titlist continues to pick up the pieces to his now shattered career, Jermell is hoping for the best. He isn’t downplaying his twin brother’s personal issues in the slightest. However, Jermell believes that his kin must accept and take accountability for what’s gone wrong recently, lace up his boots, and attack his problems head-on.
“If anything is wrong with him, you can’t be content with just, having the issue, other than fixing the issue.”
