Former Olympian teammates, good friends, but the punches flew when the bell rang to sound round one at the Vanderbuilt University's Memorial Gym in Nashville, Tennessee. Former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs) won a solid twelve round unanimous decision over former super middleweight champion, Jeff Lacy (24-2, 17 KOs).
Taylor was clearly the stronger, faster and more techincal of the two fighters. He battered Lacy in several rounds, hurting him with right hands and uppercuts. Lacy was in deep trouble several times during the contest. Taylor appeared to hold back once or twice, maybe out of friendship, when Lacy was on the verge of going down on his back.
Lacy had his moments in the fourth and fifth rounds. They were not enough to change the course of the fight. Taylor was simply too much for him. The scores were 119-109, 119-109 and 118-110. Taylor becomes the number one contender under the WBC super middleweight rankings.
