While unbeaten contender Deontay Wilder awaits an eventual showdown against WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne, another unbeaten heavyweight also awaits his turn at fighting for championship gold.
Because he won an elimination bout against Mike Perez on July 26, Bryant Jennings will fight the winner between Stiverne and Wilder.
That does not mean Jennings (19-0, 10 KOs) will sit idly by. Promoter Gary Shaw told Boxingscene.com that the plan is to have Jennings fight again before the end of 2014.
Should Jennings come out victorious, he would then fight the Stiverne or Wilder in the first half of 2015.
While Shaw is eying a fight for Jennings later this year, he hopes that fight will be televised on HBO.
Meanwhile, a clash between Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs) and Wilder could take place in late October or November. Stiverne reportedly suffered an injury to his right hand after his May 10 knockout over Chris Arreola. The WBC allowed Stiverne time to recuperate from the injury.
This past Saturday, Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) stopped Jason Gavern after the fourth round at the Stubhub Center in Carson, Calif.
Wilder is the mandatory challenger to Stiverne's title, while Jennings is ranked number two.
