MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – Today’s press conference promoting this weekend’s heavyweight dustup between Joe Joyce and Fillip Hrgovic erupted into chaos after another pair of big men almost came to blows.
David Adeleye and Jeamie Tshikeva [or TKV as he is more commonly known] will contest the vacant British heavyweight title this Saturday at Manchester’’s Co-op Live on the undercard, and they threatened to steal the show with their antics.
The pair had clashed earlier in the week during routine media rounds at the talkSPORT radio station. The two 200lb+ men had to be separated after clashing in a narrow corridor. With both men sitting just meters away from each other on the top table at today’s press conference, many expected another fiery encounter.
Tensions were high as the master of ceremonies Dev Sahni gave Tshikeva the opportunity to kick things off. Tshikeva then wasted no time launching another verbal attack at Adeleye.
"I am even more excited about this fight,” he said. “To be honest, I am offended. I am offended by David [Adeleye]’s behaviour. He knows me and I know him, and the way he has been going about talking, I am offended. The way he has been behaving is very disrespectful. I don’t take that lightly and I’m going to show him on Saturday.
"This persona that he is putting on, this bad boy persona. We are both educated men, both raised by great parents. So what are you? An academic gangster? I don’t know where this persona comes from, my brother. You say you are going to knock me out, but when I say it I am being disrespectful? You are taking it personally that I am taking this fight.”
Adeleye tried to settle things down and calmly responded: "All this educated gangster, I am just being myself. Of course it is personal, we are fighting in 48 hours.”
Tshikeva now attempted to wind up Adeleye, who was trying to control his temper after the outburst earlier in the week: “I see a scared man and I know when I see a scared man.”
“You don’t see a scared man. Where do you see fear in me? Scared of what?” Adeleye replied, holding back the anger inside. "You can ask me what happened at talkSPORT on Monday. I just cussed his weight. I cussed his appearance and he is obviously insecure about it.”
Tshikeva did not take too kindly to Adeleye’s version of events and fired back at him.
“What happened at talkSPORT was he couldn’t get to me, he tried saying I had lost too much weight and wouldn’t hold his shots,” he said. “He got frustrated because I’m not reacting to him, so he decided to pipe up for no reason. He tried to pull up in my face."
Tshikeva then politely asked Adeleye if they would like to get personal with their comments, which his opponent gladly accepted. “Did you want to take this fight?” Tshikeva said with a grin on his face, seemingly knowing he had just poured petrol on the fire.
“Yes I did!” Adeleye shouted back at him, unable to hold back his aggression. “I did want to take this fight. Me and you spoke on the phone and your managers were calling mine. What are you talking about?”
“Did you want to fight Sol Dacres [Adeleye’s previous opponent, whom he stopped in the first round]?” Tshikeva barked back.
Adeleye responded: "You called me and said, ‘I know you’re going to do Dacres,’ and after that you were saying, ‘You’re the truth.’ Your manager said to me there is nothing for Jeamie, nothing going on for Jeamie and we know he ain’t getting nothing. Let’s be real about it. You’re a bitch. Every time I fight security come because they know I’m on smoke. With you, there is no security."
Adeleye, now seemingly about to burst with anger, slammed his fist on the table and said: “I’m the truth! Trust me, Jeamie.”
Tshikeva did not appreciate Adeleye’s aggressive display and responded by jumping from his seat and launching a table up in the air towards where his fellow heavyweight sat.
The table hit the floor below them with an almighty bang and, as it did, chaos reigned on stage.
Adeleye, filled with rage, darted towards Tshikeva almost certainly with the intent to start the contest there and then.
Luckily for all involved, however, security were quick to leap in front of the pair and drag them to opposite sides of the Co-op Live Arena.
Tshikeva then left the building, shouting remarks as his entourage followed, and did not return for the customary face off.
