BoxingScene.com was advised by trainer Freddie Roach that he now trains undefeated featherweight Jayson Velez (22-0-1, 16KOs) of Puerto Rico. Velez is co-promoted by Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. Cotto is also trained by Roach. Velez was previously trained Abel Sanchez, who trains middleweight destroyer Gennady Golovkin among others.
Velez was last seen in the ring in November, where he battled IBF champion Evgeny Gradovich to a split draw in an HBO televised fight on the Crawford-Beltran undercard from Omaha.
The World Boxing Council recently ordered him to face Marvin Sonsona in a WBC eliminator to get a shot at champion Jhonny Gonzalez. That fight is up in the air. Those plans could change with Sonsona recently signing with adviser/manager Al Haymon.
