Junior middleweight contender James Kirkland (25-0, 22KOs) is set to be released from prison on September 17 and placed into a halfway house. He was orginally scheduled to be released on October 2. Kirkland has been imprisoned since April 2009 after pleading guilty to a charge of gun possession by a convicted felon. Kirkland's co-manager, Camerin Dunkin, said his fighter is ready to roll.
"He's supposedly ready to go on Sept. 17," said Dunkin. "And we'll be ready to rock and roll. I think that any division that James Kirland is in, even one with the great fighters that are in that division, he's still going to add so much to it. James is just an exciting guy with so much energy and he puts on a great fight. Now, with all of this talent around there, this is really neat, and this is really going to be something."
Although there is some discussion about Kirkland possibly returning to the ring in October, BoxingScene.com has learned that Kirkland is possibly going to fight on November 6, and then quickly follow that up with a return on the tentative date of December 11.
