Jake Wyllie continued to rebuild off the back of his defeat by George Kambosos Jnr when he earned a unanimous decision over his fellow Australian Youssef Dib at the Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane, Australia.

The 25 year old impressed in defeat on the occasion of his highest-profile fight, when as a late replacement he was outpointed by Kambosos Jnr in March, and he was rewarded by Matchroom with a promotional contract.

He proceeded to stop Thailand’s Saharat Taehirun inside a round a month later and, in his home city on a promotion featuring the high profile Skye Nicolson – who earlier stopped Urvashi Singh of India – was matched with Dib at junior welterweight in the main event.

Dib, 32 years old and the younger brother of the former world champion Billy, hurt Wyllie with a strong right hand at the conclusion of the third round.

He then hurt Wyllie with the same punch again, contributing to them tangling and both falling to the canvas and, in the fifth, Wyllie responded with a similarly powerful right hand that in turn hurt Dib.

Their largely competitive fight unfolded, until the conclusion of the 10th and final round – largely at close range with both landing to both head and body – at which point Wyllie was awarded scores of 98-92, 98-92 and 97-94 that were perhaps a little wide. Both fighters celebrated at the final bell.

“Eddie [Hearn, my promoter], hopefully this is the first of many,” Wyllie told DAZN, post-fight. “I’d fight King Kong if I got the chance.

“Lots of respect to [Dib]. It was a great fight, and definitely a step-up for me.

“I wanted to show everyone I can box as well.”

The victory over Dib represents the highest profile of Wyllie’s career, and Dib, also speaking to DAZN, said: “Congratulations to Jake. I’m never going to be a sore loser.

“I believe I won that fight. Look at my face – I’m not really marked up at all.

“It is what is is. I don’t know what’s next. I hope you give me an opportunity somewhere, Eddie.”
