Former multi-division champion Nonito Donaire has tabbed Danny Jacobs (32-1 29 KOs,) as the most dangerous opponent to date for WBA/IBO/WBC/IBF middleweight champion Gennady "Triple G" Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs).
The fight was originally being negotiated for December 10th in New York City, but the two sides were unable to reach a deal in time and the fight was pushed back to 2017. They are now looking at an HBO televised date in late February or early March.
The WBA will eventually order a purse bid. If it goes to a purse bid, the split is 75-25 in favor of Golovkin. Jacobs' team had tried to modify the terms to a 60-40 split, but their request was rejected by the WBA.
Donaire believes Jacobs' confidence is at an all-time high after watching Golovkin's last fight where he had some issues in his fifth round stoppage of IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, who moved up by thirteen pounds and two weight divisions to take the fight.
Brook was able to connect with some very hard shots during most of the fight, but he was too small to make a serious dent - where Jacobs is a legit middleweight with legit power.
"I think Jacobs has a great chance because he saw a lot of flaws with Golovkin in the last fight. Jacobs has a lot of range and he moves as well. It’s going to be an incredible fight and I think that out of all the people that Golovkin has fought, Jacobs has the biggest chances of upsetting Golovkin," Donaire told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
