The first female world champion of the World Boxing Council, Jackie Nava, has shown that at 40 she is still at a high level.

This past weekend in Mexico, Nava faced and defeated tough Karina Fernandez, who despite being 10 years younger, was outfought over the ten round distance.

“Princesa Azteca” showed great physical condition. She attacked from multiple angles and landed powerful combinations to get the victory with a dominant unanimous decision - as the judges rained down scores of 100-90, 97-93 and 99-91.

At the end of the fight, the veteran boxer challenged the current WBC super bantamweight champion, Yamileth Mercado, who was at the arena, working in broadcast capacity as she was commentating on the fight with the Box Azteca Team.

“I want her title and we hope that we can set that fight. We are going to look for it,” Nava announced.

Mercado haw no problem with making that fight a reality and believes a clash with Nava could raise her profile if she secures a big win over one of the most respected female fighters in the sport.

“She is a boxing legend and I want to become one. It would be an interesting fight and it has to happen. It is also an opportunity for me to face a legend” Mercado replied.
