Jack Mosley, trainer and father of "Sugar" Shane Mosley, gave his side of the story to BoxingScene.com's Brent Matteo Alderson on why a fight never took place between Shane and Floyd Mayweather Jr., when Shane was a lightweight and Mayweather was fighting at super featherweight.
"He asked Floyd to fight him at 135 because Shane was planning to move up to 147. Floyd said that he was going to defend his [super feathweight] title more times than Carlos Monzon did [at middleweight], so he stayed at 130. Shane moved to 147 and knocked out Wilfredo Rivera. It was the first time in history that a lightweight moved up to welterweight and knocked an opponent out," Mosley said.
"Shortly after that he fought Oscar De La Hoya. Shane clearly told Floyd to fight and he didn't want to fight. Now Floyd is telling people that he's been chasing Shane for years, but Shane is ready to fight Floyd any time he wants to fight. They gave a deal where it could be 55-45 and the winner takes 55, but I don't think they [Mayweather's side] wanted that"
Mosley then gave his thoughts on the upcoming welterweight battle between Mayweather and Ricky Hatton, which takes place on Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"Well, Floyd is a mover and Hatton is a pressure fighter. It's going to be an exciting fight. Hatton is a busy fighter, he throws a lot of punches. If Floyd can't knock Hatton out, he's going to have to match him punch for punch. I can't see Hattton outpointing Mayweather. I have to lean towards Mayweather," Mosley said.
