Jack Catterall has split with long-time mentor and trainer Lee Beard.
The news was first revealed by John Evans of British Boxers after Beard, who is based in Manchester, confirmed that the pair had severed ties.
Catterall has an unblemished ring record of 16-0 with nine early endings and was recently installed as the mandatory challenger to British super-lightweight champion Tyrone Nurse.
However, ‘El Gato’, 23, appears to be going in a different direction as it was disclosed in the latest notice by the British Boxing Board of Control that he had withdrawn from the contest.
Catterall, of Chorley, was last in the ring last month –– when he laboured to an eight-round points win over Lukasz Janik in Ashton-under-Lyne –– and holds a lofty position of five in the WBO’s latest rankings.
He is also the governing body’s Inter-Continental champion at 140 pounds.
Beard reportedly told British Boxers that Catterall can go on to achieve what he wants in the sport.
Further news regarding Catterall’s move to a new coach is expected in due course.
UPDATE: Jack Catterall confirmed to iFL TV that he and Lee Beard split and he is now training with H'roon Headley, who has been part of his team for the past few years, full-time.
"Relationships change, things happen and I think we've just grown apart," Catterall told James Helder.
"It's nothing bad against Lee but I've got to do what's right for me and I think this move has put me in a better place mentally and I can move forward from here."
