WBO junior flyweight champion Ivan Calderon (32-0, 6KOs) is sitting at home, still on a medical suspension placed by the boxing commission in Puerto Rico for the vicious cut he suffered during the rematch with Hugo Cazares. While spending the time at home and with family, he is also considering what to do next in 2009. He plans to return in early 09 once the suspension is up, and is not sure on whether he will move back down in weight to fight WBO minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes (23-1, 14KOs) of the Philippines, or move up to 112-pounds to face WBO flyweight champ Omar Narvaez (28-0-2, 17KOs) of Argentina.
"The subject of going back down to 105-pounds came up during the WBO convention and discussed during the meeting. I was told that I am a super champion and have the option of moving down to 105-pounds as a challenger, to move up to 112-pounds or to remain at 108. I'm not just going to drop down to 105-pounds, but if there is a good name, I will drop down," Calderon told Primera Hora. "If there is good money [moving up or down] I'll fight."
The holidays are coming up, but what Calderon wants most is a solid date for his next fight. He was going to appear on the undercard to Margarito-Mosley on January 24. After Margarito turned the Mosley fight down, the undercard appearance was scapped as well. There is a tentative date being thrown around of January 31.
"The best thing they can give me is an official date for my next fight. That date has been mentioned, perhaps in Bayamón. Everything is still up in the air," Calderon said.
