Middleweight contender Ishe "Sugar Shay" Smith was on hand at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino Saturday night to witness Amir Khan's 5th round knock out of Zab Judah. Smith payed particularly close attention to undefeated middleweight Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin's (25-0)) 5th round TKO victory over Jason LeHoullier on the undercard. Quillin, who also holds a victory over Jesse Brinkley, has been in the news lately as he has unsuccessfully called out middleweight king Sergio Martinez.
Smith thinks Quillin should look at a fight with him if he really wants to land a fight with Martinez. Smith is the only fighter to defeat Pawel Wolak and many felt he did enough to beat the then unbeaten Fernando Guerrero last year.
"I think a fight between me and him would be interesting. He seems to want the fight. I want the fight."
Smith and former promoter Lou DiBella recently agreed to part ways. The separation was deemed necessary in order to help land Smith a meaningful fight. He is one of the junior middleweight and middleweight division's most avoided fighters.
"He (Quillin) wants to step up and show the world how good he is and no one wants to fight me so I think its a god fight. I'm a (promotional) free agent so its easy to make the fight," Smith told BoxingScene.
Later that evening Smith and his advisor Ray Campbell would meet with Golden Boy
CEO Richard Schaefer to discuss the possibly of making the fight.
